Thank you for visiting our blog.

CONPHIC Co., Ltd. develops and operates systems and tools to support document creation.

I have explained in this blog we have to use terms and characters depending on the document types. Today I focus on “punctuation mark.”

When I write this blog in Japanese, I always use “,” and “。” excluding quotations.
In case of horizontal writing, I use “,” and “。”.

Technical documentations are, although they are also written horizontally, usually written with “,” and “.”.
In case of vertical writing like laws and novels, “、” and “。” are usually used.
We should use punctuation marks based on these writing rules when we create a document.
By paying attention to how to use the marks in other documents, we might be able to understand the intention of the writer of the documents.

Whether the document is written horizontally or vertically has great influence on how to use punctuation marks.
But document collection about how to write official documents published by Agency for Cultural Affairs shows “inorder to improve the work efficiency, after some grace period, we should use horizontal writing as much as possible.”
Now it is usual to write horizontally, so it becomes natural we use “、” and “。” in vertical writing.
